THE ZERO TOLERANCE MENTALITY, PART 4,260 IN A LONG SERIES: Adam
Hernandez, 15, a freshman at Shorewood (Wisc.) High School, was
arrested, handcuffed, and booked on a charge of theft after a friend
let him have his lunch. The friend was part of a free lunch program,
and Hernandez wasn’t, so eating the $2.60 chicken nugget meal was
“stealing,” school officials said, and they called police. But Police
Chief David Banaszynski finally decided to drop the charges just before
the boy went to trial; the school principal agreed with the decision.
“It shouldn’t have gone this far,” Banaszynski said. “There are other
means and methods to handle this kind of situation.” When asked whether
his officers should have made the arrest in the first place,
Banaszynski said the arrest was perhaps “a bit over the top,” but
“there’s more than one side of the story.” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)
…Right: there’s the ridiculous side, and then there’s the outrageous
side.

Abuso de antibioticos

MRSA

Um artigo interessante mas assustador sobre a forma como a industria agro-pecuária americana continua a abusar dos antibiótics na criação de animais (especialmente porcos) para consumo.
O resultado é a proliferação de organismos resistentes aos antibiótics, principalmente MRSA.

O que considero absurdo é a continuação de uma prática nos US quando existe um concenso (incl. nos US) que é uma prática perigosa. Apesar disso, os lobbies conseguem manter o status quo. Aqueles sacanas continuam a fazer merda de uma forma tão consistente que mete medo. Não há limite à ganância permitida (basta ver a crise económica actual…).

Eu sempre me fascinei com a maneira completamente idiotica que os americanos lidam com o sistema de saúde (ou, mais precisamente, falta dele).

Um artigo no iht, examina o sistema em detalhe. Interessante é nota que os US têm o dobro da mortalidade infantil até aos 5 anos do que Portugal!

Com a súbita e vertiginosa queda dos mercados financeiros americanos (levando todos os outros atrás), os valores de uma sociedade de consumismo desenfreado não eram questionados seriamente por ninguém.
A atracção do dinheiro fácil seduziu os dirigentes europeus e ninguém se atrevia a opôr-se ao abandono dos valores tradicionais: humildade, honestidade e trabalho sério.
Nem mesmo o escárnio aberto aos que não seguiam o mesmo abandono de valores levantava vozes sérias de oposição.

Agora que o castelo de cartas ruiu, os artigos de opinião finalmente começam a questionar o “modelo americano” ou, como o filme “Wall Street” dizia:

“Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and
captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its
forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the
upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only
save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the
USA.”

Estava a ler o artigo sobre o debacle da votacao do “bailout” de Wall Street e o artigo tinha um excerto muito interessante:

“Their mutiny captured just how much the Republican Party has changed from its 19th-century roots as the party of business and economic stewardship. The party’s base has shifted to the more socially conservative and populist South and West, and away from its historic roots in the Northeast, including Wall Street.”

A ameaça escocesa!

Um artigo dum jornal escocês (aqui) descreve como uma menina americana, chamada Ursula, descreve como vigia as potenciais ameaças à paz mundial, nomeadamente as WMD’s (armas de destruição massiva). Neste caso, trata-se de uma destilaria de whisky escocês!!! Eu prefiro Porto mas apesar de whisky ser agreste, não costuma matar! Enfim, depende da dosagem mas …
O que eu achei fantástico foi a forma directa e exacta como os escoceses descrevem os americanos: “with the astonishing innocence of the American, …” (Com a assombrosa inocência dos americanos, …”).

Este video de um jantar com jornalistas e um sósia é uma das melhores ocasiões de ver George Bush. Vale a pena ver que até tem algum sentido de humor.

Ao mesmo tempo, Bush considerou que o melhor dia do seu governo foi quando apanhou uma perca no seu lago!?! Grande estadista. ;-)
